What Is Tenax Solido?

A polyester mastic for bonding, filling and repairing stone.

Tenax Solido is a polyester-based stone adhesive, produced by Tenax in Italy. Fabricators use it to join stone to stone, close a seam, pack a chip and fill the natural voids that some slabs arrive with.

It comes in two parts. Hardener is stirred into the mastic immediately before use, and the mixture cures chemically rather than simply drying, which is what lets it set hard enough to sand and polish flush with the surrounding stone.

Customers ask for it at the Cebu counter as Tenax Mastic, or as Tenax plus a color. We stock it in black, white and transparent, and the choice of color matters more than most people expect.

Everything else in our care range treats a finished surface. Solido is the exception: it is a material rather than a treatment, and it is what puts the surface together in the first place.

What Is Tenax Solido Used For?

Four jobs, and on a Cebu project fabrication accounts for most of them.

Bonding stone to stone

A laminated edge is the everyday example. Bond two layers of 18 mm slab together and the profile reads as 36 mm, with Solido doing the holding. Mitred corners work the same way.

Closing seams

An L-shaped or U-shaped kitchen has to have a seam somewhere, and the mastic fills that join and matches it to the stone. It is why a seam on well-made cabinetry shows up close and disappears from across the room.

Filling chips

A chip on an edge or beside a cutout gets filled, cured and sanded back flush, whether the counter sits in a Cebu house or a Mandaue condo. Color runs through the full thickness of natural stone, so a filled chip hides far better than it would on a surface-printed material.

Filling natural voids

Small pits and fissures turn up in some slabs, which is characteristic of quarried stone rather than a defect. They are packed and polished during fabrication, and that is why a finished counter looks more even than the raw slab did.

How Do You Apply Tenax Solido?

Mix small batches, because the clock starts at once.

Clean and Dry the Surfaces

Dust, grease and old sealer all stand in the way of a bond. Clean the faces you are joining, let them dry right through, and leave any repair unsealed until the fill has fully cured.

Mix Only What You Will Use

Add hardener to a small quantity and stir it through properly. Curing begins the moment it is catalysed, so make up batches you can place inside the working time instead of preparing the whole job at once.

Overfill, Then Sand Back

Leave the fill standing slightly proud, let it cure right through, and only then sand and polish it down flush. Filling level leaves a dip once it shrinks, and a dip catches the eye more readily than a slight mismatch of color.

Can You Repair a Chip Yourself?

Yes, if it is small and you are patient.

Yes. A small chip on an edge or beside a sink is well within reach of a careful homeowner. Clean it out, mix a little mastic in the nearest color, overfill, let it cure, then sand and polish it back.

Hold on to the fragment if you still have it. Where a piece has come away cleanly it can sometimes be bonded back instead of filled, and being the very same stone it matches exactly.

Scale is the honest limit. Damage no bigger than a fingernail can be handled at home. A broken corner, a cracked slab or a failure around a cutout belongs with a fabricator, and a failed attempt usually makes the professional repair harder.

Will the Repair Be Invisible?

No. Close enough, on the right stone, at the right distance.

No. What you are looking at is a color-matched patch of resin set into a piece of natural stone. Standing over a busy granite you will not find it. Under a downlight, at close range, on a plain surface, you will.

Busy stone hides a repair best. A coarse mottle such as Salt and Pepper or Tiger Orange breaks a fill up completely, while a near-plain surface gives it nowhere to hide.

Veined stone is the difficult case. Filling a chip that crosses a vein means matching the ground and the vein at once, and the mastic comes in three colors rather than an infinite number. Expect a compromise.

Set the expectation before you start. On natural stone, a repair that is ninety percent invisible is a good result, and a great deal better than living with the chip.

Which Color Should You Choose?

Match the ground, not the pattern.

Work to the dominant background color of the slab rather than to a vein or a fleck. The ground is what the eye actually reads on a grained stone, and matching a black fleck on a white granite leaves you with a dark dot.

Black goes with the dark granites, so Absolute Black, Black Galaxy, Tan Brown and the darker Sapphire quartz designs. White goes with the pale whites and grays, Caesar White, Moonstone and the Calacatta quartz range among them.

For warm neutrals such as Marigold, Beige Porrino and Crema Marfil, ask the Cebu branch which of the three sits best against your particular slab.

Transparent is for seams on veined or translucent stone, where any solid color would read as a line. It is the hardest of the three to use well, because it takes on whatever color sits behind it, so test it on an offcut first.

Which color should I buy for my counter?

Yes, and fabricators use it that way on seams and edges. A repair shows up more on a plain quartz design than on natural stone, because no pattern is there to break the fill up and the color is perfectly uniform.

Do I seal before or after a repair?

After. Sealer across the repair area stops the mastic bonding properly. Fill first, let it cure right through, sand and polish, and seal the whole surface after that.

How long does it take to cure?

Curing is chemical and starts as soon as the hardener goes in, so the working time is short and a full cure follows within hours. Mix batches you can place before it sets, and check the tin for current timings.
