What Is Tenax Proseal?

A sealer that works inside the stone rather than on top of it.

Tenax Proseal is a solvent-based impregnating sealer for natural stone, produced by Tenax in Italy. Oil and water are both within its brief, and that is the line between it and a water-only sealer.

Impregnating is the operative word. Instead of building a film, Proseal draws down into the pore structure and coats those pores from the inside, so there is no layer sitting on top to thin out or lift.

It is why a sealed counter still feels like stone under your hand. Nothing has been added over the surface; the pores have simply been made to shed liquid instead of drinking it.

Proseal goes onto countertops at installation in Cebu, and it is the bottle to buy when they come due again. Walls, floors and outdoor stone are Tenax Hydrex territory. A Mandaue condo fit-out generally wants both bottles, one for the kitchen counter and one for the bathroom.

Which Stones Need Sealing?

Rarely the ones people expect, because color predicts nothing.

This is the misunderstanding we correct most often at the Cebu counter. Porosity is a property of the individual stone and has nothing to do with how light or dark a slab happens to look.

Needs sealing

Most granites, Salt and Pepper, River White, Paradiso Dark, Gray Honda and Black Impala among them. Add every marble, every travertine and every onyx we carry.

Needs no sealing at all

Engineered quartz, without a single exception, because it is manufactured rather than quarried. On the granite side, Absolute Black, Black Galaxy, Tan Brown and Marigold.

Why the rule of thumb fails

Marigold is a light brown that needs nothing whatsoever. Gray Honda and Paradiso Dark are both dark and both want sealing. Anyone who says dark stone never takes a sealer, without first asking which stone it is, has not checked.

How to settle it for your own counter

Leave a few drops of water on an inconspicuous part of the counter for fifteen minutes, then wipe them away. Stone that has darkened underneath is absorbing and wants sealing. Water that beads and lifts clean means you can leave it be.

How Do You Apply Tenax Proseal?

Three steps, and the last one is where people cut corners.

Start Clean and Dry

A pore holding water will not admit a sealer, so the stone has to be thoroughly dry first. Wash it down with a pH-neutral stone cleaner, then leave it several hours before you begin.

Apply Thinly and Let It Soak

Lay down a thin, even coat with a cloth or an applicator pad and give it the penetration time printed on the bottle. Work section by section so no area dries out before you come back to it.

Buff Off Every Trace of Residue

Take the excess off with a clean dry cloth before it sets. Whatever is left behind hardens into a hazy film, and that haze is far and away the most common complaint about sealing. Keep the room ventilated while you work.

Does Sealing Change How the Stone Looks?

No, as long as the excess comes back off.

No. Because Proseal is an impregnating sealer it works below the surface, leaving no film, no added gloss and no shift in color. A properly sealed counter reads exactly like an unsealed one.

Residue is the exception. Sealer left to dry on top instead of being buffed away sets into a patchy haze, and on dark polished granite it shows badly. That is a fault in the application, not in the product.

Where a counter has already hazed this way, the Cebu branch can talk you through stripping it back, though buffing it off properly the first time is a great deal less work.

Does Sealing Prevent Etching?

No, and this one catches people out badly.

No. Sealing keeps liquids from soaking in. It does nothing about acid attacking the surface chemically, and those are two entirely different kinds of damage.

Discoloration from something the stone has absorbed is a stain. A dull mark where acid has eaten into the polish itself is an etch. Lemon juice, vinegar and wine will etch marble or travertine straight through a perfectly sound sealer.

It matters most on the calcium carbonate stones, meaning every marble, every travertine and every onyx. Sealing those is worth doing and still will not rescue the surface from a glass of wine left standing overnight.

Granite is a silicate rather than a carbonate and does not etch, so on granite the seal really does cover the main risk. Quartz neither etches nor absorbs, which is why it takes no sealer at all.

Tenax Cera Fluida at ₱3,500 deepens color and leaves a soft sheen. It rests on the surface and wears away, making it a finish rather than protection. Never put it on quartz, where wax yellows.

Solido is an adhesive

Tenax Solido from ₱1,600 is a polyester mastic for bonding and repairing stone, stocked in black, white and transparent. It is listed here because the names get muddled at the Cebu counter.

How Often Should You Reseal?

When the water test fails, never because a date has come round.

Test Twice a Year

Put a few drops of water on an inconspicuous part of the counter, leave them fifteen minutes, then wipe. Stone that has darkened underneath has lost its seal. Water that beads on a surface that looks unchanged means the seal is holding. Marble, travertine and onyx can fail this as often as every six months, while the granites that want sealing generally run a year.

Test the Areas That Work Hardest

The zone around the sink and the strip beside the hob wear first, since that is where water stands and oil lands. A counter can want resealing at the sink while the far end is still perfectly good.

Do Not Reseal for the Sake of It

Any sealer beyond what the stone can absorb dries on top and hazes. Working to a calendar instead of a test is precisely how counters end up cloudy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my counter needs sealing?
Run the water test. Leave a few drops of water on an inconspicuous spot for fifteen minutes. Darkened stone underneath means it wants sealing; water that beads and wipes away without a mark means the seal is still doing its job. It works on any natural stone.

What is the difference between Proseal and Hydrex?
Proseal stops oil and water at ₱4,600; Hydrex stops water alone at ₱3,500. Proseal is the countertop choice in a Cebu kitchen, while Hydrex suits walls, floors and outdoor stone. Oil is the harder problem in a kitchen, which is why counters get Proseal.

Will sealing stop my marble from etching?
No. A sealer stops absorption, not chemical attack. Acid will dull the polish on marble, travertine and onyx straight through a sound seal. Keeping lemon juice, vinegar and wine off those surfaces is the only real defense.

Does engineered quartz need sealing?
Never. Quartz is manufactured, so a sealer has nothing to enter and simply dries as a film. Anyone selling you sealer for a quartz counter has not asked what it is made of.

Can I apply it myself?
Yes. Wipe on, wait, wipe off, and an evening covers it. The step that matters is buffing away every trace of excess before it dries, since residue sets into a haze.

What happens if I leave residue on the surface?
It dries into a cloudy, patchy film that shows plainly on dark polished stone. You can recover from it, but stripping it back is a good deal more work than buffing properly at the time.

Will it remove a stain that is already there?
No, and sealing over a stain traps it. Draw it out with a poultice first, let the stone dry through, and seal after that. The Cebu branch can advise on the right poultice.
