What Is Tenax Hydrex?

A water-repellent sealer built for walls, floors and stone in the open.

Tenax Hydrex is an impregnating water-repellent sealer for natural stone, produced by Tenax in Italy. Damp and water are what it guards against rather than oil, and that is exactly why it belongs everywhere except the worktop.

It behaves the way Tenax Proseal does. The liquid travels down into the pore structure and does its work from within the stone instead of laying a film across the top, so nothing sits on the surface waiting to flake, thin out or turn milky.

Where the two part company is the range of liquids each one repels. Hydrex answers water; Proseal answers water and oil together. A pool deck or a run of cladding never meets cooking oil, and the Hydrex bottle costs less.

Reach for it on facades, flooring, wall cladding, bathroom walls and the stone around a pool. Counters and vanity tops, where cooking oil is part of daily life, want Proseal instead. On a typical Cebu project that puts Hydrex in the bathrooms, on the terrace and around the pool, and leaves Proseal for the kitchen.

Which Surfaces Need Hydrex?

Vertical faces, outdoor stone, and anywhere in a Cebu house where water is left to linger.

Floors and wall cladding

Travertine makes the clearest case. Silver Travertine and Beige Travertine are porous the whole way through and are supplied for precisely this sort of work, so Hydrex is the routine treatment on them. If your Cebu build has travertine underfoot, this is the bottle it wants.

Pool surrounds and outdoor stone

Granite keeps its color in daylight where quartz gives way, so a lanai counter or a pool deck cut from Paradiso Light or Marigold is a Hydrex job. Stone left in the open works harder than an indoor floor, so run the test on it more frequently. A resort terrace on a Tagbilaran project sits in the same category.

Bathroom walls and onyx features

Onyx is fragile as well as porous, which is why we sell it as a feature material rather than as a working counter. Honey Onyx and Multicolor Onyx both take Hydrex once they are on a wall, whether that wall is in a Mandaue condo shower or a powder room at home.

What does not need it at all

Engineered quartz, every design of it, since a factory-made slab has no pore network to line. Among the granites, Absolute Black, Black Galaxy, Tan Brown and Marigold are tight enough to skip sealing altogether. Color tells you nothing here, so check the stone by name or ask at the Cebu yard.

How Do You Apply Tenax Hydrex?

Three steps, and a wall asks for more care than a floor.

Start Clean and Bone Dry

Water already sitting in a pore blocks the sealer from entering it, and stone outdoors holds damp far longer than anything indoors. Wash down with a pH-neutral stone cleaner, then allow a dry day or two before you open the bottle.

Work Bottom to Top on Walls

Climb a vertical surface rather than descending it, so any run lands on stone you have already treated instead of streaking dry cladding underneath. Thin, even coats do the job better than one heavy pass.

Buff Off Every Trace of Residue

Lift the excess with a clean dry cloth before it has a chance to set. Anything left behind hardens into a cloudy film, and correcting that across a whole floor means going back over a great deal of area. Keep the space ventilated while you work.

Does Hydrex Change How the Stone Looks?

No, as long as the excess comes back off.

No. The product works underneath the surface and leaves no film, no added gloss and no shift in color. Sealed cladding and unsealed cladding read identically side by side.

Residue is the one thing that changes that. Sealer allowed to dry on top instead of being buffed away sets into a patchy haze, and on a large floor that is a lot of surface to strip back. Move in sections, with a dry cloth following close behind you.

If deepening the color is what you actually want, that is a different product. Tenax Cera Fluida enriches tone and leaves a soft sheen, and it will go over a sealed surface.

One note on unfilled travertine: Hydrex does not pack the pits. Filled or unfilled is settled before the stone is laid, and sealing neither closes those holes nor alters how they read.

Does Hydrex Prevent Etching?

No, and on travertine that is worth understanding.

No. Sealing keeps liquids from soaking in. It has no effect on acid attacking the surface chemically, and those are separate kinds of damage.

Discoloration from something absorbed is a stain. A dull mark where acid has bitten into the surface itself is an etch. Both travertines, every marble and every onyx are calcium carbonate, so all of them etch the moment acid touches them, however sound the seal underneath is.

That is the reason we steer travertine away from Cebu kitchen counters. On a floor or a wall it seldom meets vinegar or citrus, so sealing genuinely does cover the everyday risk there. In a kitchen it would not.

Granite is a silicate rather than a carbonate, so it does not etch at all. Outdoors the thing to watch is not acid but the seal itself, because sun and rain wear it down faster than an indoor floor ever will.

Hydrex vs Our Other Stone Care Products

Cera Fluida is a wax, not a sealer

Tenax Cera Fluida also sits at ₱3,500, and it deepens color and leaves a soft sheen. Because it rests on the surface and wears away, treat it as a finish rather than as protection. Keep it off quartz, where wax yellows.

Solido is an adhesive

Tenax Solido from ₱1,600 is a polyester mastic for bonding and repairing stone. It appears here because the Tenax names get muddled at the Cebu counter.

How Often Should You Reseal?

When the water test says so, and outdoors that comes round sooner.

Test Twice a Year Indoors

Put a few drops of water on an inconspicuous part of the surface, leave them fifteen minutes and wipe. Stone that has darkened underneath is drinking the water and wants resealing; water that beads means the seal is still holding. Marble, travertine and onyx can reach that point as often as every six months.

Test Outdoor Stone Twice

Sun, rain and foot traffic take a seal down faster than anything indoors does. Look at pool surrounds and facades at the start and the end of the rainy season rather than once a year.

Test Where It Works Hardest

The lip of a pool, a doorway threshold, the foot of a wall where rain splashes back up. Those spots give way first, and a floor can want attention there while the rest of it is still fine.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Hydrex and Proseal?

Hydrex repels water at ₱3,500; Proseal repels water and oil at ₱4,600. Put Hydrex on walls, floors, cladding and outdoor stone, and put Proseal on counters, where cooking oil is the real threat.

Can I use Hydrex on a kitchen countertop?

You can, but it is the wrong tool for the job. Cooking oil will still soak into a porous stone, and oil is what marks a counter. In any Cebu kitchen, put the extra ₱1,100 into Proseal.

Does travertine really need sealing?

Yes, and sooner than granite does. The porosity runs through the whole stone rather than stopping at the visible pits, so unsealed travertine takes in water, oil and anything with color in it. Six months between coats is common.

Will sealing stop my travertine from etching?

No. A sealer stops absorption; it does not stop a chemical reaction. Acid dulls travertine, marble and onyx straight through a sound seal, which is why we recommend those materials for floors and walls rather than for kitchen counters.

Does engineered quartz need sealing?

Never. Quartz comes out of a factory, so a sealer has nowhere to go and dries as a film on top. It also does not belong outdoors, because UV yellows it for good.

How do I seal a wall without streaking it?

Move upward so runs land on stone you have already covered, keep every coat thin, and lift the excess before it dries. Streaking comes from residue setting on the surface, not from the sealer itself.

Does Hydrex fill the holes in travertine?

No. Filled or unfilled is decided before installation, with resin or grout, and sealing neither closes the pits nor changes the way they read. Either way, Hydrex still protects the stone.
