Why Choose Jet Black

Often Dyed to Hide Gray A great deal of the Mongolian Black trade is surface-treated to disguise uneven color, and the paperwork will not say so.

Treatment Fades Patchy gray areas turn up on a dyed counter within a few years, worst around the sink and along the front edge.

Test It Yourself Acetone on a white cloth. Color transfer means the slab has been treated, while undyed granite leaves the cloth clean.

Not Stocked in Cebu Jet Black is a stone we neither carry nor quote for. Absolute Black and Black Galaxy give you solid black without the uncertainty.

What Is Jet Black Granite?

A trade name for Mongolian Black, and the reason our Cebu branch does not stock it.

Walk into a Cebu supplier asking for Jet Black granite and the material you will be shown is Mongolian Black. Inner Mongolia in northern China is where it comes out of the ground, and that is the name it ought to carry.

Very little pattern shows in it and the stone is dense, so it gives you the solid blackness people have in mind when they picture a black countertop. Strict geology files it nearer to gabbro than to true granite, as it does most commercial black granites, but nothing about that changes how it performs in a kitchen.

Left untreated it is decent material. What causes the trouble is how much of it does not stay untreated, and that the paperwork never distinguishes one from the other.

Why Does the Color Vary So Much?

Depth of color is naturally inconsistent between slabs. Genuinely dark all the way through is what the best material gives you, while a sizeable share of the rest shows gray patches or uneven tone.

Everything that follows grows out of that variation. A lower grade and a lower price are what an uneven slab earns, and that is where the incentive described below begins.

There Is Also an Indian Jet Black

The same name is attached to a separate Indian stone, which is a different material in every respect. Because they share it, a Cebu quotation that reads Jet Black tells you nothing whatever about what will turn up.

Put the question in terms of the quarry region instead of the trade name. Behavior and price both differ between the Indian stone and Mongolian Black.

Why Is Mongolian Black Granite Dyed?

Because dye is cheaper than accepting a lower grade.

Slabs with uneven color would sell at a discount, so some suppliers dye or oil the surface instead. Premium is how the treated slab looks on the yard floor, it photographs beautifully, and casual inspection finds nothing wrong with it.

None of that holds. A few years in, a dyed counter in a Cebu kitchen starts showing patchy gray where the color has worn off, and it goes first around the sink and along the front edge, the places that get cleaned most.

There is no undoing it either. Repolishing only strips away more of the treated layer, so the patching gets worse instead of better.

Why the Cebu Branch Does Not Carry It

Honestly put, we cannot guarantee what comes off the container. Dye does not announce itself to the eye, paperwork can be written to say anything, and checking a shipment properly would mean testing slab by slab.

When the failure surfaces two or three years after installation, in a customer’s Cebu kitchen, that is not a gamble we are willing to take for them. Selling a stone we can stand behind beats selling a cheaper one we cannot.

How Much Does Jet Black Granite Cost in Cebu?

We have no rate for it, and that is deliberate.

Stone Depot Cebu does not quote Jet Black, because we do not stock it. Where it is sold, it generally comes in a noticeable margin under Absolute Black, and buyers asking for it by name are asking for exactly that gap.

On an untreated slab the saving is real enough. The catch is that the cheapest material in any yard is also the material whose color is least even, and uneven color is precisely what dye exists to cover.

An unusually low quote on black granite is information, not an opportunity. Suppliers with confidence in their material will hand you the slab and let you test it there and then.

What the Alternatives Cost in Cebu

On the Cebu list Absolute Black is ₱4,200 per square meter and Black Galaxy ₱3,500. Fabrication and installation each start at ₱500 per linear meter, with cut-outs at ₱500 per set.

Measured against twenty years of that counter sitting in your kitchen, the difference between Jet Black and a stone we can vouch for is small. Measured against replacing a patched counter after three, it disappears.

Where Is Jet Black Granite Used?

The applications are the same ones any black granite serves, which is a large part of why the dyeing matters. We do not stock it in Cebu, so what follows is how buyers use it elsewhere.

Monuments deserve a mention of their own, since that is where treated material fails most visibly. Weather works on a treated headstone far faster than a kitchen ever works on an indoor counter.

How Do You Test Black Granite for Dye?

Ten seconds, and it costs nothing.

Wet a White Cloth

Take a clean white cloth and put a little acetone on it. Where you have no pure acetone, acetone-based nail polish remover will serve, though the gentler acetone-free formulations will not.

Wipe an Inconspicuous Area

A cut edge works, or anywhere that will finish up hidden under an appliance. One firm wipe does it, and scrubbing the surface is not the point.

Inspect the Cloth

Color on the cloth means the slab has been treated. Nothing transfers from undyed granite, because the color belongs to the body of the stone instead of sitting on the face of it.

Any reputable Cebu supplier will let you run this if you ask. Reluctance tells you what you need to know, and a price noticeably below market on black granite is worth treating as a warning rather than as a bargain.

Should You Buy Jet Black Granite?

Not without testing it first.

No. Not unless the acetone test is one you have run yourself, and watched the cloth come away clean.

Untreated, the stone is not bad material at all. The difficulty is that nothing at the point of sale separates a treated slab from an untreated one, and the consequence keeps quiet for years until the color begins patching around the sink of a Cebu kitchen.

Where a supplier lets you test the actual slab you are buying and it passes, what you have is a competent dark granite at a competitive price. Where they will not, walk away.

Most buyers are better served by a stone that never raises the question. That is why our Cebu branch neither stocks Jet Black nor quotes for it.

What Are the Small Pits in Mongolian Black Granite?

A characteristic of the stone, not a manufacturing fault.

Occurring naturally in Mongolian Black are pinholes, tiny surface pits that mark where gas escaped as the rock cooled. Nothing in processing put them there; they came with the stone.

Fabrication usually fills them with resin to leave a smoother face. Every dark granite is handled that way, the material is none the weaker for it, and a few pits will still catch raking light.

Rather fewer of them turn up in Absolute Black or Black Galaxy, the two blacks on our Cebu list, and that is part of what the price reflects.

How Do You Care for a Black Granite Countertop?

Three habits in a Cebu kitchen, whichever black stone you end up with.

Skip the Sealer

None of the dense black granites want one, and putting it on leaves a hazy film across the polish you paid for. Absolute Black and Black Galaxy are both in that category.

Use Only Granite Cleaner

Used again and again, dish soap accumulates and hazes the finish until the shine goes flat. Keep abrasive powders, bleach and acidic things like vinegar or calamansi away from it too.

Always Keep the Surface Dry

Spotting on a dark polish comes from water left standing, so drying the surface properly deals with it. Hard water deposits round a faucet come off with a razor blade held flat, and nothing gets scratched.

What Colors Go With a Black Granite Countertop?

The guidance is the same across every solid black stone.

White cabinetry is the classic pairing, and nothing has displaced it. Crisp and graphic is how that contrast reads, and it does equally well in modern minimalism and in a traditional Cebu kitchen with shaker-style doors.

Mid-tone timber brings the warmth, oak and walnut especially. Lighter gray cabinetry takes the result somewhere softer and more contemporary.

Fixtures leave you room to move in a Cebu scheme. A clean modern look comes from chrome and stainless, while brass and bronze warm the whole thing up considerably.

Leave the backsplash plain. There is already plenty of visual weight in a solid black counter without a patterned tile arguing against it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Jet Black granite the same as Mongolian Black?

Yes. Mongolian Black is the material, quarried in Inner Mongolia in northern China, and Jet Black is a trade name for it. Suppliers move between the two freely.

When you compare Cebu quotations, ask about the quarry region rather than the trade name. Trade names follow no standard and tell you nothing dependable about where a stone came from.

Is there an Indian Jet Black granite?

Yes, and it is a completely different stone that happens to carry the same name. That collision is why a quotation reading Jet Black gives you too little to buy on.

Density, pinhole count and price all separate the Indian material from the Mongolian. Establish which one a supplier means before you hold their figure up against anybody else’s.

What is the difference between Jet Black and Black Galaxy?

Jet Black aims for solid, unbroken black. Black Galaxy is a dense Indian granite scattered with bronze flecks that catch the light and shift with your viewing angle.

Reliability is the other difference. One quarry region with consistent grading supplies Black Galaxy, whereas Mongolian Black varies enough that some of it gets dyed to disguise the variation.

What are the main types of black granite?

Several are in circulation. Absolute Black out of India is uniform and solid, Black Galaxy adds the bronze flecking, Shanxi Black from China is prized for its depth, and Mongolian Black is the budget option sold under the Jet Black name.

Two of those are on the Cebu branch floor, Absolute Black and Black Galaxy, and neither needs sealing at all. What actually separates them is appearance and pinhole count rather than performance.

Does black granite need sealing?

No, not the dense ones. Under normal Cebu kitchen conditions liquids get nowhere with Absolute Black or Black Galaxy, both being tight enough to keep them out.

Sealing them regardless works against you, since the product has nothing to soak into and dries into a hazy film on the polish.

Can black granite be used for stairs and outdoors?

Yes. Being UV-stable, granite holds its color under the Cebu sun, which puts stair treads, lanais and pool surrounds well within its range where engineered quartz would discolor. The same applies to the outdoor work we ship over to Bohol.

Anything underfoot should be leathered or flamed. Wet polished stone turns slippery, and the texture has the further advantage of hiding the scuffing that stair nosings collect.

Is Jet Black granite cheaper than Absolute Black?

Usually, and that gap is the whole appeal. It is also what drives the dyeing, because the slabs with the most uneven color to hide are the cheapest ones.

Treat a price noticeably below the Cebu market for black granite as a warning rather than as a bargain. Before you decide the saving is real, run the acetone test.
