What Is Black Impala Granite (G654 Dark)?

Dark ground, fine silver flecking, plus a quarry code it pays to know.

Black Impala is a dark gray to near-black granite peppered with fine white and silver mineral grains. Because those flecks are small and evenly distributed, the slab looks like one solid dark surface from across a room and gives up its texture only close to. The stone also trades under the quarry code G654 (Dark), and Gray Honda is the identical quarry material in its lighter grade, sold as G654 (Light).

China is where ours comes out of the ground. Priced at ₱3,500 per square meter, it lands mid-range among the darks we stock in Cebu, over Baltic Brown at ₱2,800 and under Absolute Black at ₱4,200. That positioning is a large part of why it ends up in so many condo fit-outs and rental kitchens around Mandaue.

What Should You Know About the Name?

That it is a trade name, not a quarry designation. Over the years, material from more than one country has gone out under those two words.

Keep that in mind when quotations are sitting side by side. Rather than taking the name at face value, ask the supplier which origin is on offer, since density, flecking and price all differ between them.

How Does the Flecking Read?

Finer and more uniform than Black Galaxy, whose larger bronze flecks catch the light. What Black Impala does instead is spread small pale grains evenly, giving neither shimmer nor a focal point.

The evenness is exactly the appeal. There is enough texture to keep crumbs and water spots off the radar, and no pattern that has to be lined up across a seam.

How Do You Clean Black Impala Granite?

Three habits keep a dark polish sharp in a Cebu kitchen.

Clean as You Go

Crumbs and splashes hide well in the flecking, which is convenient until something acidic sits there long enough to count. Deal with spills as they land rather than at the end of the day.

Use Only Granite Cleaner

Dish soap builds a film that dulls the polish, and residue gives itself away sooner on a dark surface than a pale one. A pH-balanced granite cleaner avoids the problem altogether.

Always Keep the Surface Dry

On any dark polished stone the most conspicuous mark is a dried water droplet. One dry pass with a microfiber cloth removes them and keeps the finish even.

Choose a specially-formulated granite cleaner instead of guessing in a supermarket aisle.

How Do You Care for Black Impala Granite?

Seal It When It Needs It

Sitting below the premium blacks on density, Black Impala does want sealing. It catches people out, since the assumption with a dark stone is that it will not.

Always Use a Cutting Board

Scratching the stone takes some doing, but a knife loses its edge on it faster than on timber. The board is there for your blades, and it keeps the polish even where you always work.

Never Sit or Stand on It

Granite is hard and not remotely flexible, so an unsupported overhang can crack under body weight. Fetch a step stool rather than climbing up onto the counter.

Is Black Impala Granite Good for Kitchen Countertops?

A sensible budget option for a Cebu kitchen, subject to one condition.

Yes. For what it costs, this is a capable surface in a Cebu kitchen, and the flecking makes it more forgiving day to day than any solid black. What follows is what you get, with the condition at the end.

Cookware straight off the heat can go down on the surface without scorching it, which engineered quartz cannot manage. A trivet is still worth using, because any stone can crack if the temperature change is sudden and extreme.
Acid will not etch it, so calamansi, vinegar and tomato leave the polish alone.
Neither knives nor daily use will put visible scratches into it.
That fine flecking hides crumbs and water spots better than a uniform black polish does.
Sealing has to happen from time to time, and skipping it is the main route by which these counters end up stained.

That last item is the condition. Because Absolute Black gets away without sealing, people assume every dark granite can, and Black Impala is the less dense rock.

Would you rather never think about sealing? Then the additional ₱700 per square meter for Absolute Black takes the job off the list completely. If occasional sealing is no trouble, this is the better value, and the argument holds equally on a Cebu City rental, a Mandaue condo fit-out or a staff house over in Bohol.

Does Black Impala Granite Need Sealing?

Yes, which takes a good many Cebu buyers by surprise.

Yes. The signal to reseal a Black Impala counter is the surface beginning to darken wherever liquid has been standing, and a busy Cebu kitchen gets there sooner than a vanity will. Treat once or twice a year as a rough guide only, because the stone tells you and not the calendar.

That notion of dark granite never wanting a sealer traces back to stones such as Absolute Black and Black Galaxy, both dense enough to go without. Black Impala is a different rock, and its structure is more open.

Whenever you are unsure, run the test. Place a few drops of water on an inconspicuous part of the counter, give them 15 minutes, then wipe. Stone that has darkened underneath is telling you to reseal.

The principal staining risk is oil. Against a dark ground an oil mark shows up as a slightly darker patch instead of a change of color, which is why it goes unnoticed until it has set.

Choose Absolute Black if you want no maintenance

For ₱4,200 Absolute Black hands you a solid uniform black with no flecking whatsoever, and it never asks for sealing. Over twenty years that adds up to twenty small jobs you never once perform.

Choose Black Galaxy if you want the counter noticed

Black Galaxy carries bronze flecks that catch light and change as you move around them. The Cebu figure is ₱3,500 per square meter, the same as Black Impala, and no sealing is required.

Choose Salt and Pepper if you want to go lighter

Salt and Pepper costs ₱2,100 and offers much the same proposition in pale gray. Sealing comes round for it too, and at hiding everyday mess it beats any dark stone.

What Colors Go With Black Impala Granite?

A neutral dark, and therefore easy to place in a Cebuano kitchen.

White cabinetry is the classic pairing, and nothing has displaced it. You get a crisp contrast, and the flecking answers the white instead of fighting it.

Those fine pale grains also stop the stone reading as one heavy block of black, which is why it settles into a small Cebu kitchen more comfortably than a solid dark counter would.

Gray is a particularly good fit, since the stone sits nearer charcoal than true black. Put a mid-gray shaker door with this counter and the scheme holds together quietly.

Timber brings warmth, with mid-tone oak the safest of the options. Go very dark on the timber and the whole run starts to feel heavy.

Fixtures in chrome, stainless or matte black all suit it. The stone carries no warm or cool bias to design around, which is part of why it gets specified so widely.

Does Black Impala granite need sealing?

Yes, whenever the water test says so. Of all the misconceptions we field in Cebu this is the commonest, because buyers take it that every dark granite skips sealing the way Absolute Black does.

Being a less dense rock with a more open structure, Black Impala lets sealer soak in where it does useful work. Skip it and that is how these counters end up stained.

How is it different from Gray Honda?

Grade, not stone. The two are both G654 from one quarry, with Black Impala simply the darker grade. Cebu pricing puts Black Impala at ₱3,500 per square meter against ₱3,200 for Gray Honda.

Where Black Impala reads near-black with visible white and silver flecking, Gray Honda is a mid to dark charcoal on a finer, tighter grain. Pick according to how dark the counter should sit.

Where is Black Impala quarried?

Does Black Impala stain easily?

What needs planning in a Cebu rental is responsibility for the water test. That should rest with whoever manages the property rather than getting forgotten between occupants.

Does the color vary between slabs?

Less than most stones do, thanks to flecking that stays fine and consistent. The ground tone can move a little, ranging from a true near-black to a darker charcoal gray.

On any multi-slab run, choose them together out of one batch. A tonal shift between two dark slabs reads as subtle in the Cebu yard and obvious once it is installed.
